The Independence Day Blood Drive event on June 12, 2019 at SM City Naga is borne out of the need to augment the blood supply in the city, as the National Voluntary Blood Services Program (NVBSP) was inadvertently relegated to the background by almost all local government units in the light of the just concluded national and local elections. Given the problem on the blood supply, it was not easy three weeks ago to look for blood units for a friend’s spouse then confined in a private hospital.
The Independence Day Blood Drive aims to generate at least 300 bags of blood, of various types, enough to cover the normal demand of all hospitals in the city for a week. The event will also serve as a reminder for LGUs to conduct or host mobile blood donation (MBD) events; it will likewise serve as an introduction to the World Blood Donor Day activities on June 14.
Being the author of the ordinance institutionalizing the Blood Donation Program in the City of Naga, and having been the program’s Executive Director for several years, Nathan Sergio took it upon himself to initiate the said Blood Drive in consultation with some friends.
According to Sergio, the choice of SM Mall as the event venue was deliberate given its accessibility, and its local management’s readiness to partner in this kind of noble undertaking. Furthermore, the choice of the date June 12 was deliberate, too, that day being Philippine Independence Day. Sergio asks, "what could be more patriotic than voluntarily donating blood to save some other people’s lives?"
Be a hero! Join the Independence Day Blood Drive. Donate blood, and save lives.
